Sirius II

Sirius II is a 41ft aluminium catamaran, built in France using Sealium aluminium for extra strength and durability. Weighing 10 tonnes, she carries 400L of water and 400L of diesel, allowing for long stretches at sea.

Equipped with a main sail, self-tacking jib, and a gennaker on the bowsprit, she cruises at 7 knots. Her navigation system includes B&G radar, AIS (a tracking system used for collision avoidance), a depth sounder, autopilot, and VHF radio, while Starlink and Iridium Go keep Craig connected offshore.

Powering her are two 30hp Yanmar 3YM30 engines, which Craig rebuilt himself. Inside, there are four sleeping areas, but Craig will be resting in the saloon, where the dining table converts into a bed with a 360-degree view.

For safety, Sirius II is equipped with a life raft, sea anchor, drogue (used to slow a boat in heavy seas), EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons), flares, and a well-stocked medical kit. The galley includes a gas oven with 30kg of propane, a fridge, and a freezer, plus a water maker to ensure fresh drinking water throughout the journey.

To stay well-fed on the long voyage, Craig has packed 100 days’ worth of food, balancing essentials with comfort. Staples include 10kg of rice, 50 packets of spaghetti, and 100 tins of beans, alongside 50 tins each of tuna, chicken breast, and Spam.

Fresh produce like pumpkins, potatoes, eggs, apples, and oranges will help in the early weeks, while a freezer full of meat extends variety. Snacks like chicharrones, protein bars, and rice crackers, plus 20 jars of peanut butter and 10kg of nuts and seeds, should keep morale high on the open ocean.
